Chemical plant explosion in Geismar, seven injuries reported

GEISMAR, – On Thursday morning, a major explosion and fire occurred at a chemical plant in Geismar along Highway 30.
The threat of secondary explosion still exists at Williams Olefins plant in Geismer, according to Louisiana State Police.
reports that according to Louisiana State Police, it is the Williams Olefins plant on LA 3115.
The Iberville Office of Emergency Preparedness said seven injuries were reported to them, according to WAFB. Emergency crews are on the scene.
Residents in are being asked to shelter in place from Highway 3115 to Highway 74 as a precaution.
The facility annually produces approximately 1.3 billion pounds of ethylene and 90 million pounds of polymer grade propylene, according to the Williams Olefine plant website. The Olefin team is responsible for the ethane transportation business consisting of approximately 200 miles of pipelines, as well as a refinery-grade propylene splitter.
LSP sent a hazardous materials team to the fire.
