Germans accuse U.S. of Stasi tactics before Obama visit

When even Zee Germans are staring open-mouthed at what they call “American-style Stasi methods” you know things have got a little out of hand. As Reuters reports, German outrage over a U.S. Internet spying program has broken out ahead of a visit by Barack Obama, with ministers demanding the president provide a full explanation when he lands in Berlin next week and one official likening the tactics to those of the East German Stasi. “The more a society monitors, controls and observes its citizens, the less free it is,” Merkel’s Justice Minister exclaimed, adding, “the suspicion of excessive surveillance of communication is so alarming that it cannot be ignored.” While Obama has defended it as a “modest encroachment” on privacy and reassured Americans that no one is listening to their phone calls, the Germans reflect “I thought this era had ended when the DDR fell.” more

(Reuters) – German outrage over a U.S. Internet spying program has broken out ahead of a visit by Barack Obama, with ministers demanding the president provide a full explanation when he lands in Berlin next week and one official likening the tactics to those of the East German Stasi.German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s spokesman has said she will raise the issue with Obama in talks next Wednesday, potentially casting a cloud over a visit that was designed to celebrate U.S.-German ties on the 50th anniversary John F. Kennedy’s famous “” speech.Government surveillance is an extremely sensitive topic in Germany, where memories of the dreaded Stasi secret police and its extensive network of informants are still fresh in the minds of many citizens.In a guest editorial for Spiegel Online on Tuesday, Justice Minister Sabine Leutheusser-Schnarrenberger said reports that the could access and track virtually all forms of Internet communication were “deeply disconcerting” and potentially dangerous.”The more a society monitors, controls and observes its citizens, the less free it is,” she said.”The suspicion of excessive surveillance of communication is so alarming that it cannot be ignored. For that reason, openness and clarification by the U.S. administration itself is paramount at this point. All facts must be put on the table.”Markus Ferber, a member of Merkel’s Bavarian sister party who sits in the European Parliament, went further, accusing Washington of using “American-style Stasi methods”.”I thought this era had ended when the DDR fell,” he said, using the German initials for the failed German Democratic Republic.Opposition parties have jumped on the issue, keen to put a dampener on the Merkel-Obama talks and prevent them from boosting the chancellor as she gears up for a September parliamentary election in which she is seeking a third term.”This looks to me like it could become one of the biggest data privacy scandals ever,” Greens leader Renate Kuenast told Reuters. TEMPERED ENTHUSIASM Obama is due to land in Berlin on Tuesday night, hold talks and a news conference with Merkel on Wednesday and then give a speech in front of thousands at the Brandenburg Gate. It is his first trip to the since he passed through in 2008 during his first campaign for the presidency, giving a speech at the Victory Column in the Tiergarten park that attracted 200,000 adoring fans. Five years on, Germans are still enamored of Obama: a poll last week showed 82 percent view him favorably.

“Zombie Attack” Count Reaches 34 After Arm Biting in Florida

Another incident of human flesh-eating brings the count up to 34 since the first attack by Alexander Kinyua on May 25th about a month ago.

This latest incident occurred on Thursday in Palmetto, Fla., when 26-year-old Charles Baker got naked and bit off some of Jeffery Blake’s arm, including a large chunk of bicep.  Blake, 48, was still being attacked when police arrived to rescue him.

Authorities say Baker was at his girlfriend’s home on 25th St in Palmetto to visit his children when he attacked Blake.  Officers deployed electronic control devices three times, but they did not effect Baker.  However, he was eventually subdued by multiple officers.

Baker was taken to Manatee Memorial Hospital for testing and then transported to jail.

One of the most gruesome attacks so far in this string of incidents was when when Carl Jacquneaux a 43-year-old Louisiana man was arrested for biting off part of another man’s face during an attack on June 6th, according to the Lafayette Parish assistant police chief Kert Thomas.

Todd Credeur was working in his front yard when Jacquneaux appeared and attacked him, chewing off some of his face. “During the attack, the suspect bit a chunk of the victim’s face,” said Thomas.

Officials continue to be concerned about the epidemic of “zombie behavior” but deny rumors that these instances might be related, or that there could be a virus responsible for the rash of cases.

Paul Standford of the Federal Emergency Task Force warned that there is a hoax email that is circulating on the internet that reads:

 

I have been hearing about a so called virus known as LQP-79 that started in miami [sic] with a homeless man. its supposedly a virus that causes brain deterioration and led the man to become canabalistic [sic]. It is also said to be highly contagious leading people to believe it will cause some kind of zombie apocalypse.

 

Standford stated that people should be advised that this email is false and urged, “if you receive the email you should delete it without forwarding it to anyone else.” According to Standford there is no LQP-79 virus. -comment If this is not true then how do they explain the zombie attacks from people who are or were completely normal especially the ones who they found were on no drugs.

Another high profile attack involved a student in Maryland who allegedly admitted to eating his roommate’s brain and heart and stashing the rest of the remains in a dumpster behind a church in Joppatowne.

Alexander Kinyua, a 21-year-old Morgan State University student, told detectives that he had killed Kujoe Bonsafo Agyei-Kodie, who was reported missing Friday, May 25th, and then eaten his heart and portions of his brain. Agyei-Kodie’s severed head and hands were found in the men’s Harford County home.

The first reported attack in this macabre wave occurred in Miami, Fla on May 23rd, when a naked 31-year-old Rudy Eugene stripped a homeless man, Ronald Poppo, 65, and then tore at and ate Poppo’s face for almost 20 minutes while traffic drove by on the busy MacArthur Causeway.

Eugene was shot and killed by Miami Police officer Jose Rivera, while he was still devouring Poppo.

In addition to this most recent attack of Jeffery Blake in Florida, there have been 4 other attacks in Florida, 2 attacks in Maryland, 7 in New York, 1 in New Jersey, 3 in Georgia, 2 in South Carolina, 3 in North Carolina, 4 in Tennessee, 4 in Virginia, 1 in Delaware and 2 in Louisiana within the last month.

FYI, after pondering what the big issue could be yesterday, I too thought that at least part of it would be related to how the Soetoro machine got to John Roberts. I believe that they found actual records proving that he & his wife literally bought their 2 children from an organization in Ireland, had them sent to Costa Rica where the Roberts picked them up. Such an arrangement is apparently illegal for a U.S. citizen to do, but that alone doesn’t rise to the level of an issue so crushingly embarrassing that it would cause a Chief Justice of the United States to violate both his oath of office AND the Constitution itself. There must be something else that forced Roberts to sell out 330 million Americans.

Steven Spielberg on Wednesday predicted an “implosion” in the film industry is inevitable, whereby a half dozen or so $250 million movies flop at the box office and alter the industry forever. What comes next — or even before then — will be price variances at movie theaters, where “you’re gonna have to pay $25 for the next Iron Man, you’re probably only going to have to pay $7 to see Lincoln.” He also said that Lincoln came “this close” to being an HBO movie instead of a theatrical release. George Lucas agreed that massive changes are afoot, including film exhibition morphing somewhat into a Broadway play model, whereby fewer movies are released, they stay in theaters for a year and ticket prices are much higher. His prediction prompted Spielberg to recall that his 1982 film E.T. the Extra-Terrestrialstayed in theaters for a year and four months.The two legendary filmmakers, along with CNBC anchor Julia Boorstin and Microsoft president of interactive entertainment business Don Mattrick, were speaking at the University of Southern California as part of the festivities surrounding the official opening of the Interactive Media Building, three stories high and part of the USC School of Cinematic Arts.Lucas and Spielberg told USC students that they are learning about the industry at an extraordinary time of upheaval, . full story
