5/13/2013 — Impressive X-class Solar Flare — X1.7 — not Earth directed

.

UPDATE: The sun has fired off a second X-class solar flare. See our latest story and videos here: Biggest Solar Flares of the Year Erupt from Active Sun: Video

The sun unleashed a colossal Mother’s Day solar flare on Sunday (May 12) in what has become the most powerful solar eruption of the year.

The giant solar flare, which registered as one of the largest eruptions the sun can unleash, peaked Sunday night at 10:17 p.m. EDT (0217 GMT) and was captured on camera by Solar Dynamics Observatory. It sparked an hour-long high-frequency radio blackout, according to the Space Weather Prediction Center overseen by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

When aimed directly at Earth, X-class solar flares can pose a risk to astronauts and satellites in orbit, as well as interfere with communications and GPS signals on the ground. They can also super-charge Earth’s northern lights displays by bombarding the planet with solar particles, triggering awesome aurora light shows.

But Sunday’s solar flare erupted from an active sunspot on the far side of the sun, so it was not directly facing Earth when it unleashed a wave of super-hot plasma called a coronal mass ejection (CME).

“No planets were in the line of fire,” astronomer Tony Phillips wrote on his website Spaceweather.com, which tracks space weather and skywatching events. “The sunspot that produced this blast is on the far side of the sun. Soon, in a few days, it will turn toward Earth, emerging into view over the sun’s eastern limb.”

Phillips wrote that NASA’s infrared Spitzer Space Telescope and Deep Impact/Epoxi spacecraft may be in the line of fire of the solar flare. The flare came from a sunspot that has been active over the last week, firing off a number of medium-strength M-class solar flares as it slowly rotates into view as seen from Earth.

Sunday’s sun eruption was by far the strongest solar flare of 2013 as the sun heads toward the peak of its 11-year weather cycle later this year. Until Sunday, every solar flare this year has been an M-class solar flare or weaker. An M6.5 flare was the strongest of the year before Sunday’s event.

In 2012, the sun fired off a series of X-class flares, including a colossal X5.4 solar flare. An X6.9 solar flare in 2011 marked the most powerful solar storm in five years at that time.

The sun is currently in an active phase of its space weather cycle. The current cycle, called Solar Cycle 24, began in 2008 and is expected to run through 2019-2020. NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory is one of several spacecraft keeping constant watch on the sun to monitor its solar activity through this active phase of Solar Cycle 24.

SPACE.com will provide updates on this powerful solar flare as new details are available today.

AMAZING PICTURES OF THE SUN not bad for a picture taken in the back garden

Amateur customer captures solar streaks in incredible detail . Amateur solar-photographer Dave Tyler, 71, used a 5-inch refracting telescope equipped with a hydrogen-alpha solar filter Shows a ‘filament’ – a snapped magnetic field, appearing to give the sun a facial expression. The sun’s fiery surface is captured in incredible detail from 93 million miles away. The stunning shot was taken by  71-year-old Dave Tyler, a photographer and amateur astronomer.

Like many of us Mr Tyler has the odd pot plant and a shed in his back garden. But, where we might have the compost heap or a vegetable patch, he has installed a 5-inch refracting telescope, equipped with a hydrogen-alpha solar filter. The filter allows him to safely observe and photograph the high-energy activity on our nearest star. Mr Tyler said: ‘When you look at the Sun you are looking at a star in high-magnification and detail – it is fascinating. It is about understanding our existence and our place in the solar system.’

Mr Tyler, from High Wycombe, in Buckinghamshire, pieced together thousands of frames using computer software to create the picture.

What appear to be bursts of flame are known as filaments – when huge masses of superheated plasma jump off the Sun’s surface.

They are formed by short-lived magnetic loops hundreds of thousands of miles long that hold dense gas suspended thousands of miles above the 6,000C surface of the Sun.

The white ‘clouds’ around the filament are breaks in the magnetic field.

Dave, a retired CAD mechanical designer, imaged the sun over 5 days.

Nasa has also produced its own version of Dave’s images – but relies on an orbiting spacecraft to capture its shots of activity on the sun’s surface.

Obama’s Alien bodyguard Video is it true.

A very strange video has popped up on the internet of a very very strange individual who was part of the security detail guarding President Obama on his visit to  at a  2012 conference. One time if someone had told me  existed i would have laughed, if you had told me we had secret underground bases i would have laughed, if you had told me we have bases on mars and the  moon because we are using secret alien technology and we have been communicating with them for year i would have laughed, if you had told me we have anti-gravity craft i would have laughed and said your crazy but as time wore on and more and more people have come forward and thanks to the internet and especially u-tube where we have access to so much information from highly respected people in their scientific fields who are  very credible coming forward with the most amazing testimonies it blows our collective mind‘s. Whether this guy is a clone (at one time i would have laughed at that idea as well) or not he certainly behaved oddly and his image is an anomaly.  Yes  the video is amusing and off the wall but this is also a serious issue there is so much going on in the world.

Please have a look and post comments.
