What would be the best thing for us to do? We asked several anthropologists the best way to go about communicating with truly unknown life forms. For this thought experiment, you have to imagine a ship has parked in orbit, but has not shown any signs of hostility. It’s just sitting there. So what do we do next? We simply have no idea how different they’d really be. Probably different in ways we couldn’t imagine. I remember hearing [linguist Noam] Chomsky remark once that maybe one day we’ll be able to see all human languages as dialects of a single language, and at first that seemed absurd, and then I thought, well, anyone who speaks Chinese can learn Quechua and vice versa, but look at dolphins – they seem to have some kind of language but despite 50 years of study we haven’t even been able to figure out the units. And they’re at least on the same planet. Who even knows what alien forms of communication might consist of? For all we know there are aliens monitoring us now but have made no contact because they’re similarly unable to figure out our language. So I’d imagine that we’d probably have to just hope they’re way smarter than we are, at least in this capacity, and would kick things off themselves.

Reportedly, the flash from the meteor could be seen as far away as Seville and Granada and astronomer Ana Leonor Hernandez from the Astronomical Center of Hite near Toledo saw it too.
“As I was looking there was a flash of light that grew in a matter of seconds. I couldn’t stop myself from screaming ‘Look!’,” said Hernandez. “At that point the group turned round to see it as the fireball became more and more intense.”
“It was like an explosion with everything turning white for a few seconds, like it was broad daylight,” she added.
Madiedo said that thankfully there was no danger that the fireball could have crashed to earth and explained, “There were several flashes of blue and green until the huge trace faded into a last flash. We were shouting uncontrollably and we kept our eyes fixed on the sky as if we were waiting for it to reappear. We could not believe what we had just seen.”
According to , the celestial display was so bright it could be seen across the entire country.
The video above was caught on camera by the Hita Observatory at the University of Huelva at around 11:45pm local time. The object struck the atmosphere above the district in the , southwest of Madrid.
